Starting my Summer I study abroad in Rome, Italy, at John Cabot Univeristy is exciting. However, after just one afternoon, I’ve learned a few things. #streetsmart
1. Taxi drivers might be insane.

Whether that’s insanely good or insanely scary, I haven’t decided yet. Safety of pedestrians on crosswalks is questionable, and apparently the speed limit down an alley is 65 mph.
2. The billboards are very small.

It may not be an important fact to you, but as a communications major, it’s fascinating. Most of them are about Vespas. (Go figure.)
3. Very few people speak English.

After studying my “Italian at a glance” guidebook, I was able to have a very brief conversation with the guard of my residence. But be warned, it is not a country that is easily navigated in English, alone.
4. Bidets are a real thing.

….and I’m still terrified to use them. Nor do I know how. I feel as if it’s too late to ask.
5. The bathing situation is interesting.

As if the bidets weren’t enough.
6. The night air is perfect.

Although we’re in one of the few buildings in Rome that have AC, an open window with the rain was enough to make me want to fall asleep instantly.
7. The espresso is very small, but potent.

I almost didn’t need more than that to satisfy me, because it was so delicious… also because it is currently 2 a.m. Will be getting another one tomorrow, however. And the next day… and the next day…
8. Recycling is required.

Punishable by law. I’m not sure if the entire population of Texas even knows what the word recycle means.
9. The long flight was worth it.

19 hours in a plane and four screaming babies later, the first 15 minutes in the city made me fall in love. I haven’t booked my return flight home, yet. The jury is still out on if I will or not.
Until next time, arrivederci.
I’m looking forward to sharing more adventures this summer. Stay tuned on my blog, or my sassy Snapchat or Twitter @fannah_hord
